This year's Finals Day features four top teams, a change from the previous year's three-team format. The expansion is an exciting development, mirroring the structure of the men's competition. However, I must admit, I initially had my reservations about having four teams in a nine-team league. But, as fate would have it, my team, The Blaze, finished third, and I couldn't be more relieved!
The Blaze will face a tough challenge against last year's champions, Surrey, in the opening semi-final. Meanwhile, the top-ranked Hampshire will take on Durham, who have made it out of the group stages for the first time. The final schedule for the evening promises an intense battle for the silverware.
A Unique Format
One of the fascinating aspects of Finals Day is the unique format it presents. In professional cricket, playing two games in one day is a rare occurrence, and players often have differing opinions on whether it's better to play in the morning or afternoon semi-final. The morning game offers the advantage of recovery time, while the afternoon slot allows for a direct momentum carryover into the final. Personally, I've only experienced playing in the morning, and it was on that very day that The Blaze won our first trophy, the Charlotte Edwards T20 Cup in 2024. It's a memory that still brings a smile to my face.
This year's competition has been particularly challenging due to the absence of many key players. International and domestic players were often missing, creating a unique dynamic within teams. At The Blaze, we rarely had our full strength XI, which meant a constant shuffle of line-ups and team dynamics. Despite these challenges, we found ways to win, and it was heartening to see younger players step up and fill the gaps. Players like Maria Andrews and Prisha Thanawala showed great promise, and their contributions were invaluable.
The Build-Up
As we approach Finals Day, the build-up has been all about fine-tuning. After a busy group stage, including a stretch of five games in ten days, a short mid-season break was much-needed. The final game against Yorkshire left us with tired bodies and minds, so the rest days were a welcome respite. Now, as we travel down to London and prepare to train at The Oval, the excitement is palpable.
Our head coach often refers to reaching Finals Day as "getting on the dance floor." For me, Finals Days are the pinnacle of professional cricket, and I look back on some of these days as the best moments of my career. The anticipation for Friday is building, and I can't wait to take on last year's champions and fight for a spot in the final. We've made it to the dance floor, and now it's time to showcase our best moves and bring home the trophy!
